How is pain managed in Ayurveda?

Pain arises from either physical or mental illness. Ayurveda terms it as the Soola Roga. Pain can happen in any region of the body; however, it is mostly caused by aggravation of a humor called Vatta. Sometimes, associations of other humors with vatta in the body can lead to different types and intensities of pain.


As per the principals of Ayurveda, the merging of five elements of the body in pairs gives rise to basic three types of Doshas, or as stated above the humors. These are specifically termed as vatta dosha, pitta dosha, and kapha dosha. All of the body’s internal functions are balanced by these humors, i.e. any imbalance can lead to ill health and pain. To relieve such pain, ayurvedic system provides medicines along with the best pain oil in India.

Vatta is generally the humor responsible for the pain in body. Pain is a stimulation used by the body to alert the person about any ill condition developing in the body. It could either be somatic or psychotic, i.e. due to external injuries or mental disturbances respectively.

Vatta is the energy that is linked with the elements regarding air or vacuum in the body, therefore, it is found to be in nerves, blood vessels, hollow organs; basically in every channel of the body. Since vatta is involved for any kind of movement or action happening in the body, hindrance to its flow results in pain. Ayurvedic theory suggests that pain does not only happen with the involvement of vatta but also if it is not involved, which means that a minimum level and pace should always be maintained. An excessive flow or an obstructed flow should be avoided to keep pain at bay or the use of best pain oil in India might help.

For treatment regarding pure vatta pain, it is advised to massage warm oil and apply heat on the region of pain for 20 minutes. Vattashama, bala, ashwagandha or mahanarayana oil mixed with sesame oil is generally used for the massages. A little pressure is used to give an effective soft slow massage to relieve pain.

The associative pain of vatta-pitta is treated by giving oil massage at the room temperature. Rajat bhasma, olive oil, coconut oil, manjistha, bala and pittashama oil are some of best pain oil in India used for this, due to their anti-inflammatory and pitta reducing properties. Medium pressure is applied to give vigorous massages followed by soft ones.

The vatta-kapha type of pain is treated over a massage with hot oils, and applying of heat up to 20 minutes. After this, a dry powder massage is also given using herbs like ginger and calamus. The oils are usually a mixture of sesame with mustard or olive and sesame. A vigorous massage is given the whole time.
